QR - A form of coded design that displays specific information unique to that particular code, which, when scanned by a certain technology, displays specific information. 

Urious - By taking away the C depicting the first letter of the word “Curious” and replacing it with QR, creates aspects of intrigue through expression.

The elements that add curiosity to my work are the hidden messages that are placed onto the QR code and are only accessible with a camera flash of a cell phone for viewers to decipher. It evokes conversation and “QR-iousity” among the pieces. When the hidden messages are revealed, viewers are embraced with diverse spiritual emotions.

The motivation behind my choice of the QR code to represent my work, is the representation of an abstract image that has now become part of everyday life in society, and being a huge fan of abstract art, I wanted to create a meaningful perception of communication within something that we instinctively use and that has become customary in our daily lives. 

This has been the fundamental purpose of my art pieces.

QR-Urious is a creation that was constructed during the Covid-19 lockdown period in March 2020 and is part of a project that is still ongoing. The focal point of the artworks is to initiate curiosity & intrigue through the anticipation of discovering what lies beyond. 

I graduated with a Master’s Degree at the Royal College of Art and my idea was derived from a study that was done about the 5 human senses, placing emphasis on one of them, “Touch” in collaboration with technology.

The insight that I share in these art pieces encapsulates the capability of transforming, healing, intriguing and strengthening the world around us, this being highly significant to the deterioration in the mental health of our society at present.

With this in mind, I was forced to navigate and to think beyond to be able to gain knowledge of creating something with intrigue, with fun, yet personal in a world where physical touch and closeness has become a restriction.

Through experiences and dark phases in my own life, I became more aware of problems associated with mental health, and through this perception, I was able to create something I could relate to, by contributing to enhance personal well being. These unobtrusive messages were so instrumental in guiding me through my own healing process. 

The area that showcases the well-known QR code, represents the darkness that has overcome the world and assumed control of our minds during this period. When light shines on the work, hidden messages are revealed through optimistic affirmations that epitomises the true meaning of my art.

The relevance of colour on an individual piece represents and evokes mixed emotional states. Every colour I chose for every piece, is a direct reflection of the affirmation represented on that piece. 

When encountering my art, I do hope it allows viewers personal interpretations of their own state of emotions through the imagery that my work epitomises.
